Here are Betty's answers to the most popular questions about carriers.

Do I need multiple carriers?

After thinking through your carrier needs, you might decide you want multiple carriers for different needs or ages. For example, you may want a wrap carrier in the early days to promote skin-to-skin contact AND a soft-structured carrier when your little one builds neck strength and can sit in multiple positions.

What age can a baby go into a baby carrier?

You can start using a baby carrier from day one. It is however important to keep in mind that babies between 0-4 months do not have enough neck strength to hold their head up on their own and must therefore be carried in newborn-specific carriers. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on age and weight limitations.

Are baby carriers safe for newborns?

Baby carriers are indeed safe for newborns despite the absence of neck support. You must check to ensure your baby meets the minimum weight requirement for your baby carrier and use a newborn insert where necessary. To ensure your baby’s safety and comfort, carry the baby facing inward until they have developed the neck muscles to hold their head high.

Are expensive baby carriers worth it?

Expensive baby carriers often have premium features or materials that cost more. From ergonomic support to features such an integrated sunshade and extra padding, some of the pricier baby carriers are great for ensuring that both you and your baby are comfortable. However, it’s important to know what you want from a carrier so that you’re not paying for extra features you won’t use.

Do baby carriers hurt baby hips?

Most carriers have been developed with professionals and received “hip healthy” approval from the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. Keep an eye out for the IHDI logo. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure your baby is held in a hip healthy position. If you position your baby incorrectly in the carrier, it is possible to harm your baby’s hips which may lead to hip dysplasia (abnormal formation of the hips).
