Crib Features to Look For - Crib Buying Guide

Aside from style, cribs can have unique features that set them apart from each other. Below is a list of all the features a crib could possibly have. Take a look and get a sense of what's possible. Then decide what's a must have.

Crib Convenience Features

  • Wheels: Some cribs are designed with wheels so that you can easily move them around the room or from room to room. If you choose a crib or bassinet with wheels, it’s important to ensure that they run smoothly and can be locked in place when the crib is in a stationary position.
  • Adjustable Mattress Height: Most cribs come with 2 to 3 mattress height settings to accommodate the different height stages of your child. The highest mattress setting is used for newborns and babies under 5 months. This setting makes it easier for parents to lower the baby into the crib especially during recovery. Lower the setting to the middle height once your child can sit and once they can pull themselves up, you switch to the lowest setting.
  • Mattress support/base: Cribs come with either wooden slats, metal bars or a metal frame with criss-crossed wires as mattress support. The 2011 crib safety regulations contain strength requirements for mattress support to prevent collapse. Wire springs are considered to be the sturdiest choice.

Crib Multi-functional Features

  • Storage: Cribs can also have built in storage (typically underneath the crib). If you want to skip the dresser or need additional storage, this could be a great feature to keep an eye out for.
  • Changing table: A few crib options have a changing table as part of the crib. This is a great option if you want to have one piece of furniture serve multiple purposes.
  • Rockers: Instead of wheels, some cribs have curved legs so that they can rock. Some high end cribs and bassinets also have technology that can hear when your little one is crying and rock them back to sleep. If selecting a crib with a manual rocker, be sure to check for a locking system so that it has the option of staying still.
